3.5

In this volume we follow two thieves who are hired last minute for a job only to have it spiral out of control. They end up embroiled in a scheme much larger and more encompassing than they could have ever imagined. With politics and scheming at every turn they do what they must to get back to their lives. This story was pretty good. It did not blow me out of the water and I lost interest a few times but overall it was a good book. I listened to this on audio and I didn’t like the narrator much. It made it hard to tell if the issue was him or the writing. I had a hard time telling characters apart and felt disconnected from them much of the time. The world building was much more intriguing in the second half of the volume than the first. I wasn’t very pleased with how women were presented in the story and felt their stories were generally underwhelming and disappointing. The plot of each story (book 1 and 2 were combined into this volume) was pretty good and well wrapped up. I thought the pacing was comfortable though at times it got monotonous because it never really varied which I think made the story lack dynamism. Overall I’m not mad about having spent time with this story but I also kind of feel like I would have been fine without it.
