An excellent book for when you feel untethered to the world.

A reminder that your purpose in life is to find your way back to yourself 100, 1000 times, over and over again.

It was good but it hit a lot of the same themes as [b:Steppenwolf|16631|Steppenwolf|Hermann Hesse|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1347752205s/16631.jpg|57612] and especially [b:Narcissus and Goldmund|5954|Narcissus and Goldmund|Hermann Hesse|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1165553931s/5954.jpg|955995], and I liked the later treatments better, so the comparison was damning.

I still liked it, I still like his writing, and the theme of duality is strong and personal. I liked the main character (Emil). He starts off so vulnerable and good natured and, similar to Goldmund, his growing and changing doesn't strip away his core personality. I'm always a sucker for the calm stolid guy so the character Demian was an easy sell.

I was a little put off by the pseudo-supernatural bend. When stuff like psychic abilities pop up in a book that ostensibly takes place in the same world as me, it feels to me like it's trying to imply that these things are or might be real. Also in books like this that are deep and introspective and really shine a light in the shadows of my own psyche, something unnatural can be really distracting.

"La cura fue muy dolorosa. Todo lo que me sucedió desde entonces fue doloroso. Pero, a veces, cuando encuentro la clave y desciendo sobre mi interior, donde descansan, en un oscuro espejo, las imágenes del destino, no tengo más que inclinarme sobre el negro espejo para ver mi propia imagen, que ahora se asemeja totalmente a él, mi amigo y guía."

4.5/5 hubiera sido un 5/5 en otra etapa de mi vida

I realize today that nothing in the world is more distasteful to a man…
than to take the path that leads to himself.

• Relatable. Still prefer Steppenwolf, but this was solid.
RATING: ★★★★½

Honestly wasn’t bad, but was definitely giving weird half-baked “childhood” “plot” just so one of the 14 year olds could spout all of the philosophies (delusions, really) Hesse believes in to the other 14 year old. Like just stick to essay collections.
