Pratchett has such a whimsical writing style, blunt and lighthearted. These short stories are the kind one might read to a child at bedtime, but theyβre still highly enjoyable for adults as well. As a Pratchett novice, this collection has allowed me to get a flavour of his writing, and convinced me that I would probably really enjoy Discworld if I ever committed to such a large series.

A fun collection of short stories for a short enjoyable read

Like many others, when I saw that there was going to be a new collection of Terry Pratchett's short stories, I was dubious. But these are not previously unpublished tales. These are some of his early works, published under pseudonyms in newspapers back when he was working as a journalist.
I listened to the audiobook, and I highly recommend it. It was a wonderful production, from the introductions by Neil Gaiman and Colin Smythe, to the stories themselves.
So, what about the stories? Well, they're mostly genteel and whimsical. It felt like they could be enjoyed by both children and adults.
They're unpolished early works, but undoubtedly from the imagination of Sir Terry Pratchett. Many stories held glimpses of ideas that later appeared in the Discworld. 'The Quest for the Keys' in particular could almost have been a Discworld story.
I enjoyed every story in this collection, but especially 'The Real Wild West' and 'Mr Brown's Holiday Accident'.
As the holly and berries on the cover suggest, this contains several short Christmas tales.
'How Scrooge Saw the Spectral Light (Ho! Ho! Ho!) and Went Happily Back to Humbug', read by Jon Culshaw, was a particular highlight.
This felt like a lovely treat, to have some more Terry Pratchett tales. It felt like a cosy, nostalgic collection.
Not rating this one. It's great for the Pratchett completist, but otherwise pretty EH. Finding the elements that would show up in much later works was more enjoyable than the stories themselves. I think the story of how they found the stories was more fun.

Terry Pratchett has a particular voice in his stories that brings in a kind of humor that is just a delight. This is a collection of short stories that have been a spark of joy in these crazy busy days of this week.
The slightly askew tales are just a fun mini escape from all things stressful, and yet some still left me with a "what just happened!" feeling that gave me chills. I loved this tiny tome.
This would make a fantastic gift for a Pratchett fan, as this is a collection of stories not known to have been his, but also to anyone who loves a little tale with whimsy and a bit of off-kelter humor!

A fun collection. You can tell it's early before Pratchett really hit his stride but plenty of fun stories in here.
