I seriously hated this book. Which might prove that the author does achieve something, like... making us hate our lives. When you close the book, you realise your life is empty, and that you should commit suicide right now. Even the style, or the lack of style, shows it : this novel is a demonstration of nihilism.
Which is why I don't like it: if an author wants do be depressed, it's his choice, but being nihilist for the sake of it, with no beauty, it's no art, it's pure destruction, intellectual joy of destroying everything, turning it into ashes and feeling superior.

This book goes nowhere fast. Typical french novel written by a pretentious and self important author.
A book about nothing. The narrator is a 30 year old man, who works with computers. He is dissatisfied with the world, finds most woman vile, and doesn't seem to have any friends. Yup, that's about it.
After I finished reading the book I learned it was part of déprimisme ("depressionism") which is a new (I assume) French literary movement and Michel Houellebecq seems to be its leader... and I thought, "ah, that makes sense."
I really wanted to give this 1 and half stars, but since I'm in a kind mood I rounded up. But if you like hearing people complain about the world and depressives, this is the book for you, if not, don't even bother with this.

A sociopathic, depressed 30yo IT worker smokes four to five packs of cigarettes a day and walks through life hating the world and everyone in it. If this is supposed to be funny, it’s the darkest humor. I hoped to like it more. Just okay.
Houellebecq's first novel and it shows - trite and undercooked.

Plot or Character Driven:
Character
