i forgot how different this book is to read. it’s good though, but despite the awards for “best children’s book”, it’s not a kids book. YA maybe, but not middle grade.
i really enjoyed the part set in
london
, now i’ve been there it’s so cool to read about stuff i’ve experienced firsthand

thoughts while reading

p61: oh no! what a thing to have said, never expecting it to really come true! i hope christopher hasn’t internalised that
p81: hmm that actually kinda makes sense
p92: sherlock holmes is also a sociopath
p96: this is trippy, christopher was 9 in 1992, and i wasn’t even born for another 11 years
p108: 44 in 1998 makes the dad nearly 70 now
p212: the most impressive part of all this is that toby hasn’t gotten lost yet

As for the story, it was nice and slow (which I enjoy). The dialog was sometimes annoying with the excessive use of "I/he/she said", but I understand it was on purpose. I didn't like the ending, it felt abrupt.
As for the autism representation, it's fine. I could relate to some things and not others —which is expected, as I'm an autistic adult woman and not a 15 y/o boy, and every autistic person is different. The main character is the classic white-male-savant syndrome type who loves maths (and he doesn't seem to like trains for a change), but I'll give it some grace because it was written by a supposedly allistic author in 2003 who "worked with autistic individuals". So, I don't find it offensive, just meh.

took me about 100 pages in order for me to realize that the book was coming from an autistic POV. i love it so much though because it was so subtle. i'm autistic myself so i thought he was relatable instead of showing autistic traits.

i give it a 4/5 due to the odd writing style + pacing, but it definitely had me hooked. the book is about a boy named christopher who's trying to figure out who killed his father's friend's/mistress's (i couldn't figure out the relationship) dog. it gets exciting and plot twist-y halfway through the book. it's all through christopher's point of view. the emotions, the logic, the pacing, everything.

It was a good book. But god damn. Nobody has patience, they are all so reckless and swear and don’t respect Christophers boundaries. I‘m so mad for him. Fuck the world.

As an autistic myself, I really enjoyed how well-crafted, realistic, and well-researched the main character felt.

I was not a fan of this book. I thought it was going to be a mystery, but not even a 1/4 of the way through the “mystery” was solved and the story turned into a family drama and the incredibly uncomfortable “adventure” a young boy with ASD goes through. It is very uncomfortable to watch this boy end up in horrible, painful, awkward, highly anxious, and distressing situations, completely alone and without a single human being to guide him or comfort him. Majority of the secondary characters are horrible people. I know it’s supposed to be true-to-life, but I feel that the author went really over the top. Where a lot of readers may have found moments funny or lighthearted, I found myself incredibly tensed and cringing. I was very disappointed in this book.

I picked this up from the library during Banned Books Week. It was very good, and I quite enjoyed the narration's unwavering commitment to the protagonist's perspective. The book would not be the same without it. Thanks to this choice, as well as the matter-of-fact way the protagonist describes all that is relevant, I found myself empathizing strongly with him. I found many of the behaviors and thought patterns he exhibited are ones that I too experience in some circumstances. I appreciated that this book gave me a window into the perspective of another person who is both very close to and distant from myself, not only learning how he navigates life's complex challenges but also how he sees the biggest and smallest parts of the world-- cars, cows, creation, time, space. This book is written at a suitable level for audiences as young as middle-grade, and beyond serving as a means of empathy, I think this book could be a very useful tool for exploring what a novel can be and learning how to analyze a fictional text that provides a limited perspective. I would very roughly guess that took me 10 hours to read this book from cover to cover.
