This book is mostly sad and dark but also contains some optimistic content and speaks of those (of any gender) having advanced the state of things. Avoid if you don't want a depressing read.

Wow. This book was so much to take in, and I'm so impressed by how readable it also was. Such a broad scope of history and yet still retains a really personal touch throughout. It filled me with quiet rage, and incredulity at how recent some of our meagre progress has been - it put everything into easy-to-understand context and historical framing with so many examples and a strong narrative voice. 

The final chapters made me cry and also want to vomit. 

Approach with caution - triggers abound. 

An excellent, enraging read.

I didn't quite know what to expect going into this has I hadn't read much about it apart from the blurb but I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting an overly "white feminist" take on the subject however, the author does a great job at acknowledging the issues of systemic racism in the medical field. 
I found the middle of the book most interesting and in particular the legacy of eugenics and birth control. 
I would however liked to have seen more on LGBTQ+ women and bodies but I suspect that is entirely its own study. As a sufferer of endometriosis, I am too familiar with the gender bias in medicine and found this to be a must read.

A history I feel like I need to know but didn't want to know. The history of how women have always been treated medically is tragic but its a history that makes me, chronically ill woman feel better about my struggles, and less alone.
