Despite how pretentious this was...despite the casual ableist slurs and emphasis on queer men being depicted in a specific way...despite the narrator claiming twice not to be a misogynist...I was actually intrigued by The Last Werewolf. The pretentiousness worked because Jake himself was meant to be so, and I liked both his nihilism and the way even when he was ready to stop living, there was always something that kept him alive. The conflict surrounding him being the last werewolf and wanting to learn his species' origin, the threat of the vampires and WOCOP, these were building up to a compelling narrative...and then the "romance" came in, and I was completely over it. I already knew how this book ended from having looked into it a few years back, but once Tallulah came in and the focus shifted, I knew for sure I wasn't going to be satisfied.

I feel a little bad giving this only 2 stars given that there wasn't really anything wrong with it. It just didn't grab me for some reason. So, for me in all honesty, "it was ok." Duncan does a nice job updating the werewolf story while still nodding heavily to its origins in Victorian horror novels. And there's plenty of action and lots of sex, but I wasn't totally caught up in it. Couldn't really tell you why.

It felt stuffy and slow. That and the very chauvinistic male gaze of the POV was just off-putting. No interest in investing that much time into a book

Read as if literary pretentiousness was more important than the plot and characters. Not my cup of tea.

I think there were more references to anal sex in this book than in actual gay erotica that I've read. Turns out Werewolves like doing it up the butt.
This was an interesting take on the Werewolf genre, and it was easy reading, although the first half of the book, in typical lit-fic fashion, has basically no plot. I didn't mind, but I can imagine it being boring for some. The book lost me a bit towards the end - the death of characters we should care about fell flat, almost like the author could barely bring himself to care.
Over all, this book wasn't terrible, and it certainly has plenty of beautiful lines to highlight, but I can't say I'll be running out to read the sequels.
