I have decided to read Hardy in publication order. I have read several of hos works and lo e his writing. This was my first time reading this one. Hardy's first published novel, it is very different to his usual work. It is a sensational novel but he does manage to still include a lot of descriptive writing which we associate with him.

This is mainly the story of Cytherea Grey who falls in love with Edward springrove. Due to certain circumstances she is pressured to marry someone else. Lots of secrets and mysteries as you would expect from sensation novels. Very predictable, I noticed several of the clues and worked out what was going on however I still enjoyed it.  I wouldn't read it again but I am glad I read it.

A poignant tale of the human experience. The ending was predictable, on account of the blurb giving away the ending, but it was written so beautifully that it almost made up for that blunder.

Not what I expected from a Thomas Hardy novel. As described it is more sensationalist, but you can get a clear sense of where his style is developing from.
