Humorous, adventurous and dark at times. The author created one lovable character and a horny bland self-insert. Much plot, mystery and adventure keeps the pace of the sort very entertaining to follow and while set in a very real and terrifying setting, the horrors of war are not shied from.
Never thought a book could be so funny and depressing at the same time. Definitely a unique book with a very likable character (not the main character).

The characters (particularly one) are very funny and also this subject matter is of course not funny. It’s set during world war 2 and there are plenty of disturbing horrible things that happen. The writing style of this book is great and very easy to read.
Took a while to read because of school and such but if I had the chance I would have finished it in one sitting!! Great book that focuses on both history and humor.
17 year old Lev is thrown in jail during the Leningrad siege for looting a dead german soldier. While in jail he meets Kolya, a young funny, smart-ass Russian soldier who was arrested for deserting. Thinking they are likely to get executed for their crimes, they are instead taken to a NKVD officers home where he promises to pardon them if they can bring him a dozen eggs for his daughters wedding cake.
This leads them on a dangerous adventure to find the eggs. It's a coming of age story of survival and
though a WW2 story, it only covers just the Leningrad siege. David Benioff is a wonderful storyteller and manages tell the story with humor.

The ending made no sense at all but I was having a good time until then.
I liked this book so much when I read it 6 months ago that I am re-reading it now! It is just such a well told story of an unusual quest and fight for survival during war time. The two lead characters are so well developed. If others are have read it or would like to read it, I would love to discuss it more.
This was a really well written book and an outstanding detailed look at the Leningrad siege of WW2. Recommended.
