When I first sat down with this book, I originally planned to just get started and eventually finish it sometime within the next few days. As it turned out, "within the next few days" ended up becoming several hours of a single afternoon, half of which were spent on the edge of my seat as I felt myself be transported right there to besieged Leningrad and the war-ravaged lands surrounding it. I don't think I would have been able to stop myself even if I tried - not that I wanted to.
If historical fiction is your preference yet you haven't given this a shot yet, then I recommend that you send "City of Thieves" right to the front of the line of your to-read itinerary.

Loved it! Took me a while to get through, but I'm that way with most historical fiction. It was a witty, unique, and lovely read, albeit a bit cliche with the ending.
The characters were so well done, and the story never bored me. Great read honestly. #DoRecommend.

This book is excellent but sometimes hard to read. There is humor mixed with some really dark subject matter. But very well done and I really liked the book.
This book makes me want to sit down with a tape recorder and ask my Grandpa about WWII.
It's a great book about a journey with a new friend. It's also amazing to think of people living this way because of war. No eggs, No bread, no coffee and gasp! no smokes?! As a modern American I can't imagine living this way but the main character in this story perseveres. I can't recommend it enough.
