I was entertained and captivated but kept waiting for more to happen. I’m extremely unsatisfied with the ending. While there were tense elements I would not call this a thriller.
This would make for an interesting book club read/discussion!

Love Island to its most dystopian, late -capitalism, horrific extreme.

3/5 ⭐️: reading this felt like binging a twisted version of Love island!” The Compound” is a show where contestants couple up and work to win communal prizes, which could be anything from essentials to luxury goods. Pretty normal reality TV fodder, but as the tasks become increasingly manipulative and emotional, tensions rise and things in the house begin to fall apart. Plenty of good commentary on late-stage capitalism and consumption. Not quite as dark or dystopian as I was expecting (there are some hints towards this, but there’s not a lot of world building beyond the compound). The ending feels kind of unsatisfying, but does that just reflect the character’s feelings of disillusionment? Hard to tell. If you fancy something readable and (at times) fun that’ll make you think, this might be for you.

This book is very fun and has some great things to say about consumer culture and late-stage capitalism. Lily is a great perspective to experience this story through, she reminds me a bit of the narrator from Fake Accounts. I wouldn't quite call it Love Island meets Lord of the Flies, I think that's overselling the violence, but the tension is certainly there the whole time. A good, quick, engaging read that didn't do much for me emotionally but was very fun and didn't overstay its welcome.
A reminder that the material is only relevant so long as there's someone to share it with. Even if that someone is Tom and is the worst.

This was a fun read- like Love Island crossed with Survivor and Lord of the Flies. The perfect summer book.
