It has good character development for only a novella. It didn’t feel rushed or forced.

It's likely meant to bead in between the main series.
Advice reads as if you should know her already. I might have liked the book more if I didn't read it first. In the middle I was debating if I should con tinue the series or not and at the moment I'm not ruling it out.

But
Evered was a little bitch and I was low-key glad when he died, not gonna lie.

This prequel to [b:Beneath Black Sails|51224985|Beneath Black Sails (Beneath Black Sails, #1)|Clare Sager|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1584286038l/51224985._SY75_.jpg|75970019] is probably one you should read first if you are to read it at all (just saying because I always make the wrong call on these things and did so - again.) It's also a great bridging story if you've read any of the Counterfeit Contessa series (sabrecats!)

It isn't required reading, but it'll give you a great intro to Lady Vice's accomplices (notably her relationship with side characters Perry, Saba and the other piratical ladies of Cap'n FitzRoy's ship) that isn't so obvious in the main book, as well as give a background as to how a young lady of good breeding became a notorious seafaring legend.

It charts how Lady Avice Ferrers fell head over heels in love... With the wrong man. The handsome Evered Lyons wasn't highly ranked enough in society to ever be acceptable to her father. Not when a certain Knighton Villiers with a substantial fortune and a naval career ahead of him was very much available. Unwilling to be bartered away, she and her beloved elope in the night. But her family aren't willing to let her go, and only an escape by sea could save them as long as their love endures.

Being a prequel, it's shorter and less bombastic in the swoonworthy drama department but no less interesting. It's there to give you a primer on characters, not the full on romance experience. There's steam but, well, due to the characters involved it's not quite a romantic fantasy. It actually amused me to see two characters having a... less than stellar experience (sorry Vee) because you just don't get that usually. Life's full of disappointments and disasters on a small, personal scale and these ones show us just what shaped Vice's life.
SpoilerI didn't always get Evered though - one minute he's Mister Perfect, the next he's Mr Patriarchal Grouchypants. Does Avice's youth mislead her and so we see him through her eyes? Is it only when she comes to the sea that her perception of life is changed? Did her unknowingly-fae-charm-laced suggestions make him go to sea against his will and that's why he changed? Oooh, questions!

I loved the whole alt-Regency England full of fae magic ruled over by a Druidic religion. You get a real sense of this through the looking glass fantasy world that's not quite our own. It's fun meeting some of the other characters mentioned (like Avice's family) in the main series and getting a little more about them. Did I mention it'll also make you crave to know a certain Kat's story? I think I need it.

TL;DR: If you want background story to enrich your reading experience, start here. If you'd prefer just the romance, start [b:Beneath Black Sails|51224985|Beneath Black Sails (Beneath Black Sails, #1)|Clare Sager|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1584286038l/51224985._SY75_.jpg|75970019]. Either way it's more flighty fantasy fiction.

Love this world

An amazing Prequel story to Beneath Black Sails. I loved getting to know Vice a little more and really seeing what the world she came from looked like.

I liked the FMC I hope the rest of the series keeps at it
