To be honest, I found the book underwhelming. I just think it was a little cliché and it sucks that I even figured out the plot twist in the end.

Also, the Indian representation is not even highlighted that much. For example, the mourning culture of India should have been utilized. It would've also been great if Kit had more dimension aside from being the kid of someone who just died. (quite harsh but she could've been so much better)

David on the other hand, is an amazing character. His povs highlighted his autism and it was represented well. Alongside with his sister, Miney, David shined even more, probably overshadowing Kit.

It's sad to see that this book is just another case of an amazing lead character being paired with a not so amazing lead character.

Overall, it was an 'okay' read. I just had a higher expectation since I saw the rating on the app.

Julie Buxbaum brings a powerful young adult novel with What to Say Next. Both leading characters have unique perspectives in this story. Kit struggles to find meaning in life again after losing her father. David fights the stigmas attached to being neurodivergent. While both characters' paths are difficult and often sad, they help each other to grow and find joy in their lives.

super super cute
didn't think i would like it in the beginning and found myself comparing it to all the bright places- imo this is much much better
kit and david are so well drawn out as characters and even the side characters felt very real
the plot twists were not obvious and not farfetched at the same time which can be hard to come by
