Reasonable rendition of the increasingly tired 'end of days due to an impending asteroid impact' trope. No new ground broken here but worth the short read.

Ark is the 1st read in the Forward Collection when a warning that an asteroid is approaching Earth, and people need to prepare to be evacuated.

This short story focuses on Samantha, who catalogues plant samples to take on the evacuation.

I liked that when it came to choosing which music to take they could only afford to take 1 album as digital music wasn’t possible to take and records were the only form of music that could have been taken.

That is until she finds a rare orchid and instantly connects with an older scientist!

Given the short number of words, I think Veronica Roth gave us a nice intro into this series, I do want to know more!

Unexpectedly hopeful

Diving into this collection headlong is a remarkable experience. I didn’t know what I was getting into and thought at first I would be very depressed. But the story ended on a surprisingly hopeful note and I am eager to read the rest of the collection.

A solid read. Nothing especially out-there in terms of futuristic sci-fi tech, just a somber narration of what it might be like in the future when the death of the planet is imminent. Would enjoy a full novel-length story on this premise, especially the different viewpoints of young and old, deciding whether to have children before the apocalypse, etc. Lots to explore there.
