This was like taking bad tasting medicine that you knew was good for you. It stretched me, I learned from it, the author of course is amazingly talented. If only I knew anything about Mexico's history. Could of done without the misogynist stuff. But still, glad I read it, won't read it again, may read his ghost story book.

This book was well-written, but nothing drew me into it. I could care less about Artemio's death, for example, which is partly the point, but it makes it difficult to appreciate this book. Perhaps I would like it more if I were more well-versed with Mexican history.

I kept thinking I'd get through this book because all the descriptions are "classic Latin American novel" but death bed ramblings are not my cup of tea. I wish I'd read this in one of my many Latin American lit classes, but coming to it by myself later on just doesn't have the same urgency.

this book felt like a not that satisfying synthesis of a bunch of other Really Good books i’ve already read!!! such is the plight of the mexican i suppose. jk but it was very well done i just stopped caring. beckett does better deathbed scenes and rulfo does better mexican gothic if u can call it that
