My first DNF in a while— there was a lot of cool sci-fi stuff here. Too much, in fact. 100 pages in I had no idea what was going on and no investment in any of it despite end of the universe-ish stakes. Maybe this should be treated like the third book in the series of her previous duology? But it didn’t work for me as a stand-alone.

This book is really unique and original, but it just wasn’t for me.  I really enjoyed the characters and their diversity, and I was semi-invested in the plot. But ultimately, I had no clue what was going on most of the time.  There was so much fancy science stuff happening that didn’t make sense, and I think a more thorough explanation of looping and the portals things would have helped.

I had such high hopes for this book, but I really just couldn't finish it. The writing felt sloppy at times, and from what I did read, the plot was messy and didn't make sense. Maybe I'll try again some time, but for now, this book was a heavy no.
