In this YA mystery horror, you will be sucked in from page one. It opens up by drawing you in, following a mysterious egg timer and resulting in a students gruesome murder. This chapter convincingly sets the scene of the novel, with the promise of graphic horror delivering throughout the book. We follow Makani, who has a mysterious past, as she tries to piece together who the murderer is whilst her classmates are murdered around her.
This novel is graphic, I feel like I have to say that from the get go. Blood, knives, mutilated bodies, all of that stuff. So massive trigger warning if gore is not for you... but if you are in the mood for something fast paced and gory, give this one a go. With 287 pages of fast paced action, vivid imagery, and classic who dunnit, made this an easy five star read for me. It was also one of a few books which actually leaves me feeling a bit scared and jumpy. Reading this at night would probably have been too much for me!
Recommend for readers who like gore and are looking for something creepy in a 'this could actually happen' sense.
Triggers: as mentioned gore and everything to go with that sort of serial killer violence.

It wasn’t that engaging and there wasn’t even a plot twist.

I absolutely loved this book. I happened to read it a eeek before the Netflix adaptation came out, and was so disappointed with it! I was so excited for it to come out because this book had me sucked in immediately. I finished it in a day and a half. 100% recommend.

Good for fans of horror of the murder and mayhem variety. Some unnecessary language, references to underage drinking, and sex though gratefully not described in much detail. The story makes a few right turns and draws the reader in but it makes some wrong turns too which is why I can only give it 3 stars. You won’t (can’t) guess whodunnit until you’re told and that feels anticlimactic. Character development is kind of uneven and a lot of the references date the author not her characters. But I imagine this will be a satisfying read for teens in a genre where there’s not a lot of new work.

Ugh I am so disappointed by this. The title alone made me think it'd be creepy. I was hoping for a good teen slasher, maybe a little cheesy and campy. I got a romance with a murdery backdrop, it's not even a cute enough romance to interest me.
This book is literally Ollie and Makani making out or having sex with some murders thrown in. The main characters weren't even scared enough for a small town with a serial killer on the loose.
The victims are people we don't know and not part of Makani's circle. I didn't even care about them, there was no shock or sadness and I couldn't even try to guess who'd be next. Zero suspense. We found out who the killer was in the middle of the book. The killer's reasoning? Stupid. I kept hoping for a twist, especially since we knew so soon who it was. Alas I was let down, which is the one thing I can count on from this book.
Good lord Makani's "dark past" that's constantly hinted at is so stupid. I literally can't roll my eyes hard enough.
If you want a non-scary 'horror' book with no suspense, immature characters, and a cringey relationship then this is for you. Otherwise, i'd stay clear.

Spoiler
Every time we got a different POV (or chapter main character), they were dead by the end of the chapter. Talk about killing any potential suspense. But I could forgive that for a good fun slasher with gory(ish at least) killing scenes - but this wasn't good or fun.The victims are people we don't know and not part of Makani's circle. and it was someone barely mentioned with stupid unbelievable reasoning. The whole town is after him and yet he continues to kill people, no one can find one scrawny teenager?? Come on.Good lord Makani's "dark past" that's constantly hinted at is so stupid.
Spoiler
The new swim team girls were being hazed and drunk as skunks. Makani cuts off the other girl's ponytail, other girl had hot sauce in her eyes (thanks to someone else) and ran into the ocean. She almost drowns. Makani was blamed?? What. 3rd degree assault for cutting off someone's ponytail? Are you freaking kidding me. And Makani's new friends actually say yeah, she'll probably always be mad at Makani ... what?! It's fucking hair. Makani's worrying over it made it sound like she killed someone. Then her whole old town blamed her for some reason with death threats. The whole thing is stupid and unbelievable. I hated it.Spoiler
while we're on the topic, why TF would Makani (who changed her last name when she moved) actually think that the killer uncovered her "horrible deed" and want revenge, causing them to go on a muder spree where they attack people not even connected to her. Talk about self centered. Revenge for what? For a fucking hair cut? Get a grip.If you want a non-scary 'horror' book with no suspense, immature characters, and a cringey relationship then this is for you. Otherwise, i'd stay clear.
