Bullet Review:

Okay, was gonna give full stars because this book was addictive as crack - but that effing ending! WTF was that??! I'm still like on this high and hanging out there, wondering where my conclusion is.

Nonetheless, up to that final issue, I loved this. Vaughan is a favorite and this is another reason why - even with the absurd premise and weird ending.

Stunning and thrilling but not up to snuff by both artist and writer's usual fare and fairly mindless and ineffective as a whole due to some strange disparate choices.

I'm a sucker for alternative history and it's partly the reason I gave this 3 stars. The ambiance of an invasion of Canada by the U.S. strikes a nice chord, however displeasing that actually sounds. But I think the story was a bit lacking even though the graphic novel is six issues. The ending tried to sound deep with the domestic disorder most likely heightening because of this pyrrhic victory by the Six by Four but it just didn't feel that striking. It also felt highly unlikely the way things played out for the convenience of the ending. Also, the numerous characters presented in the first issue felt overwhelming. I didn't expect Vaughan's style of killing off characters so quickly would start in the first issue. But I should've known that it'd start that early considering this is such a short read. I think Vaughan did a great job of making me feel emotional after certain torture scenes and deaths but by the fourth and fifth issue, it felt overdone. I felt a gradual decline in sensitivity to each death.

Rating Update 3/12/2019 - 3 to 2 stars. I didn't really like it. Way too boring with few things going for it.

Update
With the adoption of my new rating system, a two star rating is befitting. The original review and rating update conform to the new rating system. This book does not reach a one star-rating because I enjoyed the futuristic setting. The plot, especially the ending, and the constant kill-offs detract from a potential three star-rated book. I did not enjoy the Canadian victory.

Update
Partly because I cannot remember the book, I cannot express how greatly I disliked the ending. I have placed this book in the 2L rating type, which is currently under scrutiny because of the debate of how far a bad, one star-rated endings impacts the two star-rated plot. For this book, the positives in the original review seem to balance out with the negatives, especially the ending. Currently, I find that the initial reading of this book was a waste of time and that the reread of this book would be a waste of time.

Update
I have skimmed the graphic novel again and found I had forgotten my liking of the American military. In the case of this book, I also found that the contents seem independent enough from the bad, one star-rated ending, hence this book's rating type change from 1.5I to 2L.

The concept, art, and character design were all fantastic. The plot and characters didn't capture me or speak to me, but as an artistic concept, it was great.

Most people think of comics as the land of fantastic heroes and noble causes. This is not the case with We Stand on Guard. This is a comic about "what if" America and Canada came to odds. What would happen? We find out through the eyes of Amber Roos, a girl who's mother and father was killed in the initial attack on Ontario, and has been on the run with her brother for 12 years. With her brother captured, Amber is on her own and she runs into the 2-4 Squad, a group of intrepid civilian Canadians who seek to run the Americans out of their country.

Unlike others, this is all there is. Though a short story, it is an impactful one that shows that the killing of someone's parents doesn't always make that person into a hero; sometimes, it's the little push they need to become the bomb that will push others back.

Awesome short series about a war between the US and Canada. By Brian K. Vaughan -- need I say more?

Not my usual cup of tea, as I tend to stay away from anything with political themes or influence, simply because I'm not interested in that type of conflict.
This really surprised me, as it wasn't as politically heavy as I thought it was going to be. The story reasoned out her motives over the six issues, but it seemed most others were irrationally patriotic.
I enjoyed the art, if at times there is a bit of gore. Story was well thought out. Great read.
