Writes in a language of crisis and brutality (even when translated). The language of gossip, community, infused with the pervasive misogyny of a society in crisis and a phantasmagoric  sense of superstition.

"Hurricane Season" paints a raw picture of a tough world, where violence and the struggle to survive are front and center. The characters' lives and the story's blunt honesty really stand out. I tried to find the promised poetic touch but failed. Some of the descriptions are too graphic and the characters hard to connect with. The novel tackles heavy topics like child abuse, prostitution, and corruption, showing a society marked by inequality and abuse and some descriptions are shocking offering an unfiltered look at a harsh reality. What I found a little odd in the Romanian version is that the translator used a turkish term to depict a big party although the book is from Latin America. I have no idea how it is written in Spanish, but I found this a little odd.

i sped through this. i think it’s really well written but i knocked a few points off because it’s not exactly my personal preference in a novel. so dark. the stream-of-consciousness writing took a while to get used to, but it’s written in a way that makes it less smothering and more natural somehow? a lot of the themes kind of went over my head, ngl. ending was kind of unsatisfying.

This was the Difficult Women Book Club pick for August

I was excited to pick this up as the premise sounded so interesting and I was looking forward to reading more Latin American literature, but I was quite disappointed. I found the writing to be very misogynistic at times, and not in a way that I thought portrayed the views of characters, but more as an excuse for the author to use language and descriptions that are very violent and degrading towards women. There was also a lot of very violent homophobia that I found to be quite gratuitous. This book is absolutely filled with depravity of all kinds, and probably has every trigger you could think of, so proceed with caution!

Even though the writing was quite clunky and stream of consciousness, I did find it very readable. I found the way the sentences ran on to actually help keep my attention. I don’t think I would have finished it as quick as I did had it not been so hard to find a place to put the book down.

Overall, i’m not sure i’d recommend this to most people. It’s certainly not for everyone!
