I loved the storyline of this book, with its unique and creative magic systems and the incredible strength of the Eversun women who have endured so much at the hands of men. Their resilience was powerful and inspiring to read. That said, I did feel the sexual violence—though often more discussed than shown—was heavier than my personal preference, so I’d definitely recommend checking content warnings before reading. I really felt this one building to the next book and am looking forward to it.

Look, it's really difficult for me to rate this fairly because the original fan  fiction has SUCH a chokehold on me, but I think overall I wished that Soto had tried to flesh out the magic system a little more fully. I thought this was going to be more of a medieval setting than full on fantasy, but in my mind, it never really added onto the world or created it's own. That may all change as the series develops, of course and I liley still will read it, but despite devouring this, I wanted more from the author.

I went into this one blind. I found it at the library in the hot reads section and didn’t even read the back.

I was honestly going to give up on romantasy (probably just take a long break) but thought to try this one.

Don’t get me wrong…it still has all the frustrating parts of romantasy - a way too slow burn (I get why though) and ended on a a cliffhanger.

Now I need to warn everyone that this is DARK dark. It made me quite uncomfortable most of the time as a female living in this current day and age.

There was human trafficking, rape. further objectification of women and the captor and prisoner dynamic. Plus bullying at the beginning when they were in school together. I can’t handle that.

Now I can’t rank it lower for that BUT please check the trigger warnings beforehand.

However, this was actually quite good. The magic system was cool and the dual timelines allowed for foreshadowing and the slow revelation of secrets.

The sexual slavery of the women from Evermore was awful every time there was one of those dinner parties.

The biggest frustration to me was the fact that it was clear Toven always had feelings for Briony but never acted in it even though they alluded to him being an experienced lower. The most that happened was them making out in bed at the end. I doubt the next book will rectify this.

This was one of the best fantasy books I’ve read in a while. Soto created a beautiful world with corrupt politics, a complex magic system, and a brilliant plot. The flashbacks mixed with the development of the story creates intrigue while also setting the stage. I truly loved this book.
