Skillful writing as always from Julie Soto! There was a tiiiny bit of disappointment with this for me:
It was honestly very hard for me to rate this book - one of a trilogy - in complete isolation to its fic counterpart which was a standalone story. (Familiar characters always hit different.) While I certainly enjoyed the new world building, I’m looking forward to “more” in the coming books, not just plot-wise, but I felt like some character development was lacking,
and I recall that being bigger towards the end of the story. Some understandably omitted  elements were missed.

A whole lot of nothing. Auctioning of slaves. Bystanders to sexual assault on multiple occasions, masked as "showing off their property". Stockholm syndrome? Literally nothing plot wise happens in this entire book.

Ok I will be continuing with this series, but this book was unnecessarily long & drawn out without much plot progress. Now if it had some kind of payoff for the reader, fine, but for me it was just a frustration of lack of communication. The two MC’s seemed so irrationally dumb. But hopefully they figure their shit out in the next book?

Julie Soto has a way of making me feel what her characters are feeling and empathizing with them and their predicaments even if I don’t actually like the characters. She also writes spicy scenes very well. I’ve enjoyed everything else I’ve read by her and this fits that bill. It’s not perfect. I wasn’t in a headspace to enjoy another story of a male-led world where women are subjugated and oppressed. That’s on me, not the author. I really had a hard time stomaching all the virginity = purity talk. I understand it was the bad guys doing it, but I was just so over it :D I understand this story was inspired by other author’s work and originally a fan fiction, but honestly that had zero bearing on the enjoyment or understanding of this story. I think the publishers did J. Soto a disservice by marketing it so heavily as a fan fiction.
