Despite how incredibly f***ed up and disturbing this world was * content WARNINGGGS * I for some reason ate this up it kept me hooked and horrified the whole time. I wish
we actually got a little more developed w toven and briony and that he wasn’t such a little dumbass still by the end, but I did actually appreciate the full long enemies to lovers (ish) slow burn. Normally I hate but it was hitting here
I <3 Harry Potter. And handmaids tale I guess.

Everyone should read this book. That being said, mind the triggers.

The characters were badly drawn. Motivations were muddy while the characters were "unnecessarily" cruel.  About half way thru I gave up - how can this be considered romantasy when so far the main character is the only one with romantic feelings? Bored.

Skillful writing as always from Julie Soto! There was a tiiiny bit of disappointment with this for me:
It was honestly very hard for me to rate this book - one of a trilogy - in complete isolation to its fic counterpart which was a standalone story. (Familiar characters always hit different.) While I certainly enjoyed the new world building, I’m looking forward to “more” in the coming books, not just plot-wise, but I felt like some character development was lacking,
and I recall that being bigger towards the end of the story. Some understandably omitted  elements were missed.

Julie Soto has a way of making me feel what her characters are feeling and empathizing with them and their predicaments even if I don’t actually like the characters. She also writes spicy scenes very well. I’ve enjoyed everything else I’ve read by her and this fits that bill. It’s not perfect. I wasn’t in a headspace to enjoy another story of a male-led world where women are subjugated and oppressed. That’s on me, not the author. I really had a hard time stomaching all the virginity = purity talk. I understand it was the bad guys doing it, but I was just so over it :D I understand this story was inspired by other author’s work and originally a fan fiction, but honestly that had zero bearing on the enjoyment or understanding of this story. I think the publishers did J. Soto a disservice by marketing it so heavily as a fan fiction.
