Idk if I can actually rate this - I much preferred Anne Anlin Cheng’s essay on this (ha ha) - beautiful in theory, challenging in concept, but definitely on purpose? I really didn’t wanna say i was too stupid to read this, but I think it’s also been a while since I read something so experimental. Still, I loved the semi-biography and disembodied photos.

This was the most interesting piece of writing I've ever read.

Reread when older. Do you understand more? Is that the point?

i am sure that this work is a masterpiece but i was unable to read it that way! give me a few years! a lot of its beauty was lost on me, i didn't realise i was following plural narratives, didn't understand where the author was taking me even as i followed happily along. i was excited to pick it up each time i did, but always left the work more confused than before. the style and focus on language spoke to me - synonyms listed without punctuation, paragraphs omitted, then slotted back in the wrong place. there was a focus on perspective (where you should look, what you can't see), in what can and can't be said. i need to read around this book before i try it again!
