I was surprised when walking by the book cart at the hospital when I saw Cheaper by the Dozen. My family loves the Steve Martin movie so I paid the dollar for the book.
Both the book and the movie are about a large family (12 kids) but then the diverge.
I love the dedication in the front of the book:
To Dad who only reared twelve children
To Mother who reared twelve only children.
This book is not linear so you do not get a sense of how the family progressed and how order was brought about, but instead the books is filled with anecdotes and stories, mainly about their father. He was fun, smart, innovative man but also hard, demanding, and arrogant.
Because the story is old (1949) and and the writing is evidence of Frank and Ernestine's superior intellect, I found the read to be dry and difficult much of the time.
I found the family and especially the parents very fascinating. I look forward to reading their second book Belles on Their Toes

Big mixed feelings on this. Truly charming escapades and antics of clever children and their eccentric and loving parents. But it's totally permeated with toxic patriarchy, authoritarian parenting, sexism, racism, ableism, elitism, etc. If you can put all that in its place, I think it can be enjoyed but there are definitely some sections that fell flat.

This book is a funny representation of normal family life if you have a large family. it is funny and so relatable, all of it is things you or someone you know can relate to. Even if you are an only child you can still relate to some things the children and their parents go through together. This book is very funny and good.

This novelization of the Bonnie Hunt and Steve Martin film was written decades before the making of that classic. Time warp!
