I loved this book SO much when I was a kid. It stuck with me for ages after reading it.

In some ways, I feel guilty about my high rating. I fell in love with this book before I understood that Mother and Father were parodying minstrel shows--yuk! The family dinner table makes the entire book worth reading, though. Topics of general interest! Banging elbows! How marvelous!

I read this book multiple times as a child (for Battle of the Books) and for some reason the only things I remembered going into this was that the kids had their tonsils removed and listened to language records in the bathroom. It's a funny little set of vignettes, but there's some awful racism a la 1904-1924 involved which made it way less enjoyable than it otherwise could have been.

I have loved this book for years, but listened to the audio book while traveling with my kids recently. The voices were well done and the story was just as funny and touching as when I read it long ago. All the kids liked it (even the teenage boy, which is saying something) so I highly recommend it.

Loved this maybe more than when I read it in high school.

DID NOT FINISH

When I was a kid, my parents took us to see the movie that had been made from this book. We all thought it was quite fun. I believe I read the book a number of years ago, perhaps when I was living in Pittsburgh. I liked it pretty well then. Now, not so much. I'm 10% through and already considering giving up. The father is a cruel asshole, who thinks he's quite the humorist.

So far, I got to 25% through, but then took up Edgar Wallace. I thought to come back to this, but I didn't see the point. It sucked for me.

First read this book in elementary school and then again in jr high and then again in high school. It's one of my faves and I am hoping Gabriel will like it too!
