Read for book club.  This was just as funny as I remember.

Along with its sequel, one of my favorite books of all time. The Gilbreth and Shirley Jackon memoirs make me want to have at least 4 kids. Mercy, Maud.

How come I didn't add this book to my list before? It's one of my favorites! The movie, oh how that disappointed. At least the remake. A coworker gave me her copy of the original on DVD, because she bought it by accident. At least they got it right--all the chaos, the eccentric father, the efficiency schemes. I think this book made me want to at least marry into a large family (I'm an only child.) So I did.

Loved also the sequel, Belles on Their Toes.

A guilty childhood gave.

This sounds more like fiction than reality, with a zany but devoted father and all the funny happenings. As for negatives, there was some swearing and using the Lord's name in vain (quite a bit), lying by the father to get discounts, making light of Christianity, not always respecting elders or being kind (though that may be expected of any children--yet it should be corrected). For positives, there is, of course, a general love of children/large families and the mother respectfully submits to her husband whenever possible. And it did get me laughing from time to time, which is not too common for me while reading.
