The Famous Five series is an absolute comfort read for me. I grew up with Enid Blyton and re-reading her work brings me so much joy! This particular adventure takes place at Kirrin Cottage in the winter, where all children except George like their new Tutor, Mr Roland. George and Tim find themselves deep in adventure and Julian, Dick, and Anne topple in after them.
As usual, the characters follow some decent development. It is again explained that George hates being Georgina and wants to be a boy. George is a feisty and fierce tomboy with an equally fierce but loving dog. Anne is portrayed as a shy, well behaved little girl and is consistent in her characterisation. Julian and Dick had a lot less characterisation in this book though... It might be some of the least characterisation in the whole series. It fails to mention much about the boys other than Julian might like to be an artist one day...
The writing of Blyton is always so enjoyable for me. She has a knack for capturing the atmosphere of their adventures so realistically, and I find myself shivering along with Anne while they explore a dark and dank tunnel... I love their cosy nights in front of the fire and the weather beating on the windows! She is a little repetitive at times, but it is still a quick and enjoyable read.
Overall I love following these 5 on their adventures. They fit together seamlessly and their pursuits are ever so enjoyable. Regardless of nostalgia, I think this is a really fun, well rounded series that is a fantastic bit of quick-reading.

Read this at bedtime to my 9-year-old son. He loved it and would anticipate what he thought would happen next.
