I couldn’t, I couldn’t do it anymore. Everyone says to “just stick with it” but this book is so incredibly scattered, chaotic and muddled that I had to stop.

Gah! I’m so frustrated because this book could’ve been everything for me. I love massive fantasy worlds, magic, gods and a plethora of species and yet I couldn’t enjoy it because I’m too damn confused the entire time.
I couldn’t “see” the world.
I’m sorry, I can’t just go with the flow 100% I need SOME answers to grasp onto, minuscule ones would’ve been acceptable at the very least.

If I had been able to see the world better and connect with the characters more then maybe I could’ve been fine with the “mystery” of everything. But when every aspect of the story is jumbled together it makes the reading experience far less enjoyable and clouded by frustration and confusion.

A decent start to the series. The book started off slow but when they arrived darujhistan it ramped up pretty quickly

I liked it but I can see why people talk about rereading books while continuing the series... I'll definitely continue the series, but if I do the next book and then reread of the previous one or just read the entire series and then give it all a reread I have no clue yet. I have also to decide if I should mix in the other books from the other author while doing this or wait. But yeah definitely worth the read so far, but also definitely not for the faint of heart!XD

Malazan is the reason why I will fail my 2025 reading challenge.

I had to read a guide alongside this book just so I wouldn’t second-guess everything. Kudos to the Malazan fans who put together spoiler-free guides!

And the worst part? You can’t even get angry at this book because it’s actually really good and it just keeps getting better with every page. Still, despite the countless characters and epic action, I felt like I barely understood even the introduction to this world.

If people complain that Brandon Sanderson doesn’t hold your hand while introducing a new world, they should read Steven Erikson and re-evaluate that statement.

10 out of 10, would recommend.

Great book, very deep. I actually almost gave up reading. Lots of factions, relationships are murky until 3/4 of the book. It was actually useful to flip back and forth between the notes and the actual book. Definitely reading the next book of the series.
