I had no idea what was going on for the first half of the book, and now that I’ve finished it I still don’t understand everything. but I still think I’ll continue on in the series

Good gods, what did I just read?
Despite this being book one of ten, it wraps itself up pretty well. In addition, for an epic fantasy that stretches another 9,000 pages, things sure did get epic! Like, endlessly and recklessly epic. Battles that rupture reality, fights between gods, and then the quicker more grounded fights between mortals. Add to that an extremely intricate plot balancing on complex concepts that require you to actually look at that glossary in the back, that make you reread passages to make sure you understand what's happening--I mean, I'm mostly just excited to keep reading.
This has been on my to-read list for years. Ever since I finished A Song of Ice and Fire, really, since this is usually first on the list of books people recommend once you blow through Martin's series.
But the idea of diving into a 10,000 page epic is, to put it mildly, daunting.
Luckily, this is so unstoppably fun and interesting. It's hilarious at times--something I really didn't expect, given its grim reputation--exciting, intellectually invigorating, and just a pleasure to read.
Of course, there's a bit of a learning curve. Things are complex to the point of confusion at the beginning. Erikson throws you in and it really takes a while to find your sea legs. You're dropped into an existing story that's moving rapidly with so many different and disparate pieces working together and against and parallel to one another, which makes the first 100 to 200 pages difficult. I found myself rereading things and just reading pretty slowly in general.
But once you get into things, this novel flies. It's fast paced and complex and just exciting!
But, yeah, maybe even starting book two later tonight. I've read about 400 pages in the last 24 hours, so my eyes may need a break, but I'm excited to see what happens next.

Nothing describes a page turner more than this book. Epic. Mind blowing. (Literally as you are thrown into a whole new world brimming with 200 different characters, multiple storylines and the most awesome powers you will ever witness, without even a hint of introduction.) It's like playing Age of Empires where the map forms as you go exploring the whole country and there is not cheat code like Marco Polo.
