This book is all about plot. There are a million characters, multiple that use different names, the magic system is too complicated to have been explained in one book, and often times so much would be happening that I would be fully lost. It drops you right into the world with no hand-holding. That being said, it was a fun challenge and the plot was enjoyable in the end. Most of my enjoyment was from the satisfaction of finishing such a dense book. If you’re into that, then I would recommend reading this. Otherwise, I did nit really care about most of the characters and they were all pretty one dimensional. Wouldn’t recommend to most fantasy readers.

Kinda confusing at first and takes some work to follow. Great story and a lot of depth once you get going though. Really looking forward to the next book and the rest of the series.

this is probably the best book i’ve read so far. it’s certainly the best written fantasy book word for word. erikson was so ambitious to toss you in blind, give you no time to get up to speed, and mostly see through the eyes of characters who also don’t know what the hell is going on. not only does he masterfully weave in some incredible indirect characterizations, but he grapples with numerous themes and critiques of the fantasy genre as a whole without being overt about it. you can miss 90% of what he’s doing and still enjoy a wonderful story. it works so well largely due to how it’s structured and paced. it’s an entire 600+ page novel written with the density of a short story and a non-linear narrative. a lot of things you witness, you won’t have nearly enough context to grasp until later in the book - which, if you’re a fan of it, encourages you to go back, re-read, and engage more actively with the text, pick up on the wall of subtext and literary devices, etc. Because of this, I wouldn’t recommend it to most fantasy readers, and especially most readers in general despite erikson taking a lot of influence from other genres.

Sinceramente, no me ha gustado, en ningún momento me ha enganchado y no he sabido por donde cogerlo.
