Wow. This book made me cry as I was sitting in the dark reading off my phone. I just love the character’s growth and the author’s ability to shine light on both protagonists. It was so joyful to see Mallory bloom and set boundaries for herself. And the author was very realistic about demonstrating that growth is not instant but can take years and can continue our entire lives.

small-ish

There was themes of one’s status in society (what does that mean for the person’s identity? how do people around them act towards them? how are they viewed?), finding oneself (while this is a love story, Mallory finds it in herself to reflect and push herself to change), and courage.

It really hit me hard when Rider expresses that nobody believes in him because of his address and the area he lives in. As if the location of his house and status as a foster child changes the value he can bring and does bring to the world. People  in the novel give up on him. People whose jobs are to be encouraging. How discouraging is it to be knocked down so many times in life, not have a stable support system, and not being able to choose where they’re placed? And people JUDGE. The school administrators and teachers did not even try to believe and I think that’s exactly what Rider and what people need. Is for someone to believe in them no matter how much they might push against it or display self destructive behavior.

It broke my heart to read the pain Mallory and Rider felt as children and the residual pain that there is no one in the world that cares or knows about them. If they went missing, nobody would care. It makes my heart ache to think about the children who fall asleep tonight thinking and knowing that if they went missing, nobody would know or care.

I really enjoyed reading from the perspective of a character that is so vastly different than me. I think the conflict was realistic and I could comprehend the actions of every character. I loved that the book dealt with slow healing and involved but also flawed parents that had the grace to apologize when they messed up. Even a good teacher had some time to shine.

The two were very cute and I loved the way they learned to speak to each other.

The Ex is not a complete bitch in the end. I don't believe girls always have to be pitted against one another especially over a guy. I don't think her being this mean in the beginning and middle was necessary either, Mallory's struggling with standing up for herself could have been shown differently. But at least the aspect that they could still be friends was not an issue and cheating just not the typical drama.

I liked some parts if the book, but the not talking part and stuff was very annoying
the breaking up in the end because she deserved better was very annoying if that didn’t happen i would rate it 3.0
it was cute and a very good way to spread awareness about the child/youth care. Very real and very honest characters which i loved! But i think the book could be shorter because of an experience that did not add anything to the story (the spoiler bit). So 2,5/5 stars, okay romance with a very serious topic! (Check triggerwarnings!)

*SPOILERS*

Gonna be honest this book was a
big letdown. I went into it thinking I was going to cry but noope nothing.

The story is all about mallory who got brought up in Foster care with her "protector" rider. They got split up after a traumatising event and (now fast forward 5 years) mallorys starting public high-school and guess who she crosses paths with..... rider.

From there they fall in love but then after someone they care about dies they split up only to get back together a WHOLE 3 DAYS LATER.

The story dragged and basically went knowhere. I just didn't find it developed or was as great as it could've been :/

Saying that if you want to find out the effects trauma has on people or just generally want to learn about the Foster care system this book if for you, just be aware there is little to no plot development at all :))
