This was a cover (and title) read. Very spur of the moment. The tone of the story and the character narration surprised and drained me. The story was predictable and you could tell from the end of Cole's chapters where it was heading and while intense, I would not exactly say it's a thriller. It feels more like a literary horror to me. Horror in the everyday, real life sense. The mixed media elements were hapazard and created unnecessary filler. The book would stand without them: having a part from Cole, Mel and Lennie. I understand the intention behind it but it did not work well with this book. It should have but it only weakened the reading experience. I felt the book could have spoken for itself. There is a fictional article in the book written by a man after the events and that summed the book up for me as a woman: Women are going to keep trying and men are going to keep failing. It's a cycle that never ends. A woman speaks up and the one or two men whose eyes are finally opened by her words stumble through the most pathetic apologies with their feigned ignorance. Oh, I just realized how hard it must be to be a woman. I never thought about his behavior that way. He wasn't really my mate... We need to talk about those good guys as well. The bar is in hell and the devil is sitting on it.
