DNF 18%, 1 hr 23 min into audiobook. I think I see what this is trying to do and I don’t like it lol

The message resonates but the writing needs so much editing and the execution was heavy-handed. Would have definitely gotten the point across without needing to explain it repeatedly through multiple characters across multiple forms of media.

It's so scary how as a woman I know of a man like this, and I'm glad my best friend helped me realise how bad that relationship was 🩵

- it was weird reading it in Coles POV at the beginning. I wasn’t expecting it all.
- I could tell straight away that he was a narcissistic pos who just gaslights at every opportunity.
- it was a very interesting story and the third act was told through multi media.
- no chapters?????? Strange.
- the ending… hmmm… well it definitely makes you think.  Were they in the wrong, were they valid?
For me… I GET why Lennie and Mel did it. 100%. But they also wasted so much money and resources which I don’t agree with. Yes they implicated an ‘innocent’ man for the murders but he wasn’t really innocent was he? So idk. A lot to think about.

The blurb does not reflect the contents of the book so you are in for a ride. I assume the detail was left unsaid to increase the shock factor that was the key theme throughout. The first 60% of the book was rough and I’m not fully sure why I didn’t DNF. Cole was insufferable, which I’m guessing was the authors intention - and don’t get me wrong, the book really made you feel a ton of tough emotions - but by the end, I don’t think I fully understood the main point? Maybe the book was written that way to raise more questions and keep the conversation alive around women’s violence, but with such an important topic I think there should’ve been more clarity.
Overall, tough read and not one I’d recommend as I don’t know what outcome was supposed to be achieved .

Cole is "one of the good guys" from the title, except that he's good from his own POV. The first half follows his life after his wife leaves him. He escapes to the countryside, where he falls for another resident on the island, an artist named Lennie. Things erupt when two women who are staging a walk to demonstrate how women must live in this world disappear. Did Cole have anything to do with their disappearance?

The book is primarily about the relationship between men and women, and how women live in fear (not walking down dark streets, wary of men who approach them, feeling the need to appease in fear of an angry man). The second half is told in various ways, from his ex-wife's POV, from Lennie's work, Twitter, Reddit, news shows, etc.

The message of the book is strong, though a bit heavy handed. Repetition made it a little slow to read. However, this was a creative way to handle the subject, and overall I enjoyed it.
