I LOVED THIS!!!! I LOVED IT SO MUCH, PERHAPS LOVE DOES EXIST!!!!! the whole thing was so fucking swoony oh my godd even with the revenge plot at center stage, i was blushing literally at any point that ela/lyra and keston were in the same scene together. i thoroughly enjoyed the flashing back and forth between past and present so that ela’s tragedy and consequent spiraling into present was slowly revealed to us; getting bits and pieces as we got further in made me more invested and made her as a character as well as her relationships with the other characters so much more interesting! “i have a secret”/deception trope stories usually play the same plot beats, so there was not much new there, but i didnt mind it in this story because i just had so much fun in this world with the characters and the ending resolution was so satisfactory to me. i loved ela and her character growth journey and her relationship with church, i loved rosalin and zia and sally and j and q, i loved keston, and i loved how hateable poppy was.
i especially loved how the story also took the like ‘bridgerton show approach’ to artistic casting freedom, where majority of the cast was people of color (mostly mixed, bc titling inheritance) and there were a few lgbt characters too and no one rly batted an eye because none of it had anything to do with the actual plot of the story; it was so wonderful and the south asian cultural references made me so happy to see it was all beautiful and i wish there were more regency romances like this!
only reason this book doesnt have 5 stars is because ive never rated anything 5 stars before, but if it stands the test of time in my heart then i will definitely eventually bump it up that final 0.25. cheers!

I checked this audiobook out of my library. This was my first of Howard's books and I can honestly say I cannot wait to read more of her catalogue.
Brief Synopsis: What would you do if your childhood best friend robbed you of everything you held most dear? Formulate and execute a detailed plan for revenge of course. At least that is what Lady Ela Dalvi does. Determined to inflict the pain she was forced to endure as a young girl on her childhood friend turned nemesis, Poppy, during the coming London season Ela must use every tool at her disposal to get revenge. Treating revenge like a game of chess Ela sets out to topple Poppy's position as Queen. However, fate has other things in store for Ela in the form of her first love. As Ela tries to out-maneuver the other players in the Ton will she get revenge or will she lose the biggest piece she has to play, her heart?
Thoughts: This book was so good! Ela was a beautifully constructed character and her resilience was truly inspiring. The way that Howard layered the story together, like weaving a blanket made me fall in love with Ela as a person. As more and more of Ela's past is revealed you come to understand her better as a person and I was rooting for her from the very darkest parts of her revenge plot to the shinest bits of her story. I wanted her to succeed!
Howard is an exceptional writer. Not just overall in terms of the plot of this book, but it has truly been a while since I have hated a character more than I have hated Poppy. Even from the very first time she appeared on the page I immediately saw a red flag waving. However, the true ugliness of her character isn't revealed until later in the book and by then you are rooting for Ela so much you hope that everything Poppy loves is taken from her.
The love story was also so complicated and vulnerable. The second chance offered to Ela is so breathtakingly fragile that you are worried it won't succeed because you can feel Ela's fear of vulnerability just ooze off the page.
Also, Ela's group of school friends was so close-knit. I loved the relationship dynamics and the found family of it all made the risks Ela takes all the scarier.

Fun Fact: The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) based on the novel by Alexander Dumas remains one of my favorite vengeance/adventure films ever, and this book did it such stunning justice! I love when a character is wronged, and is set on making a comeback, specifically with the objective of exacting revenge on the ones who caused their suffering. I support women's rights, but more importantly, I support women's wrongs. Ela/Lyra did nothing wrong, and I stand by everything she did hahaha.
I absolutely adored this! I am a historical romance honey and when you add in an entirely diverse cast of characters? IT IS MY CAT NIP! Amalie Howard took such great care in representing both people of color during the Regency era, as well as recognizing that queer folks were present too! I'm so glad we had bisexual/pansexual representation in Blake, even if he was a side character.
The first-person POV of Ela, along with dual-timelines (one timeline starts at 1814, while the present day is 1817), drove the story perfectly. Ela's voice was bitter, funny, and determined, and we are given glimpses into the three years she spent away from the ton at a girls' boarding school, under the care of Church, a thirty-something year old woman whose identity is a bit of a mystery at first. This dynamic perfectly mirrors Edmond Dantes's relationship with his fellow prisoner, the elder Abbe Faria. I squealed when I realized what Amalie was setting up. I yelled, "IS SHE KIDDING? THIS IS PERFECT!"
Ela took these three years to plan the demise of her mortal enemy and ex-best-friend, Poppy, and I was rooting for Ela the entire time. Poppy felt reminiscent of every jealous, vindictive, deflecting, pick-me friend we see in YA who projects their insecurities onto seemingly malleable people, and only wants sycophants around them. Poppy would absolutely weaponize ww tears on bookstagram when being called in for doing better lmao.
As far as the romantic subplot of the second-chance, hidden-identity, childhood-friends-to-lovers romance between Ela/Lyra and Ridley (the son of a duke), I appreciate accountability but I still think Ela can do better. My CountESS of Monte Cristo deserves ONLY THE BEST! Hahaha. Rosalin (whose parents are from China) was my favorite side character in the group of friends, because she felt the most fleshed out.
One thing to note, is that the dialogue can sometimes be anachronistic, but it never took me out of the story. If anything, I found it funny and truly had a silly, goofy, delightful time reading this!

“I’m not trying to save you, Ela. You need to do that on your own. But I am determined to show you how much you are loved and wanted, so that one day, maybe, you decide to save yourself.”
“I do not understand why you can’t let the past go,” she said.
“This burning desire for vengeance upon those who have wronged you will eat away at your soul.”
“It will eat away at me if I turn the other cheek.” Church glared, showing some healthy fire for the first time in weeks.
“Isn’t that your Christian duty?”
I glared back. “Don’t you dare turn your malleable theology on me, Church."
“What’s best for me is for me to walk my own path, even if it leads to my fall.” I held her trembling palms in mine.
“Because I have a friend like you to help me up. We have each other.” I swallowed hard.
“Even if you might not believe in my choices, I know you believe in me. Don’t you?” Church’s face crumpled.
“You know I do. More than anything else.”
“Then trust me to find my own way.”
“I don’t want you to get hurt,” she whispered.
“A smart person once told me that pain is a lesson in itself and I’ll only learn from it.”
Oh, God, I wasn’t going to swoon, was I? I wasn’t a swooner. Never had been. My constitution was as strong as iron, yet in this boy’s presence, I felt like I was made of nothing but gossamer.
“We don’t get do-overs, Lord Ridley. We only get to do better.”

When she was fifteen-years-old, Lady Ela Davis’s life was ruined when her best friend, Poppy, spread a rumour about her. Ela’s father sent her away to a school, away from her friends and the boy she liked: Keston, Duke Ridley. Three years later, Ela returns to high society as the heiress Lyra Whitley. Her plan is to get revenge on Poppy by separating Poppy from her friends and removing her from her place at the top of society, while potentially claiming Duke Ridley for herself.
Queen Bee is Bridgerton meets The Count of Monte Cristo. I loved the revenge plot. Ela was wrongfully accused of something, which led to her being removed from high society. It always bothers me to see people wrongfully accused of something when you know they didn’t do it. Though this revenge plot could be perceived as bullying, with the way that Ela manipulated things to pin on Poppy, I think Poppy deserved it in the way she was constantly trying to tear other people down to raise her status in society.
Queen Bee is a fun story of vengeance.

This book was SO MUCH FUN, oh my gosh. I haven't read any regency romance books before, so this was a bit out of my usual reading comfort zone. I'm so happy I requested this ARC. It was enjoyable from start to finish! The characters were all fantastic and funny and they felt like real people with things motivating their choices and feelings. The main character Lyra/Ela was 10/10. She's sassy, smart, and so motivated by her revenge plans it's inspiring. I want to be just like her when I grow up. And the love interest!!! I love Kes. I would be distracted by him too ngl.
Literally the only thing I disliked about this book was that Ela was only gone for 3 years before coming back, and the only difference in her appearance was that she went through puberty and grew out/dyed her hair? I dunno, I've recognized childhood friends that I haven't seen in nearly 10 years before, so that just felt too unrealistic to me. Buuuuuut I enjoyed the rest of it so much that that was a very small issue.
Anyway, thank you to Joy Revolution and NetGalley for providing me with a free ARC of Queen Bee. I highly recommend picking up this book when it is officially released.
