FANTASY IS BACK! This is such a good book! I was HOOKED. It is Divergent meets dragons and I don’t see how others don’t see the clear parallels but I have no complaints.

To be perfectly honest I finished this book in a day, so obviously I liked it. I thought I was going to put it down and go to sleep and what do you know, I'm awake and the book is finished.

I love dragon books. Let's put that out there right now. A Natural History of Dragons is one of my favorite series of all time. I love world building and magic building. In the beginning this book did that, but eventually it was all about two characters getting in each others pants. Fine, it's a kissing book, and perhaps I wouldn't have been taken aback if I hadn't gone into this book thinking it was YA I could recommend to students, but it is absolutely not YA and I absolutely cannot recommend this to students. The second half of the book is spicy and graphically so, which just isn't my genre of book. It honestly read more like fan fiction to me in those scenes, graphic for graphic sake.

I will likely read the second book just to see what happened because there is an interesting (though not original at all, you can definitely see this author was inspired by Divergent and The Hunger Games) twist at the end and I hope it will bring the story back to dragons and magic.

I'm going to let the blurb explain the premise because I worry I will spoil it if I try. I will say I did enjoy watching the main character Violet find her voice and strength. Her character development was going swimmingly...and then...it was all about a dude. Like, ALL about a dude.

3.5 stars.

I didn't hate this book as much as I thought I would, honestly, but that didn't mean there weren't things I disagreed with. Now I will say that I got a major sense of nostalgia from this good because it felt like an older version of How To Train Your Dragon which I grew up with. The characters weren't too bad and the concept was pretty good. I can see why people did enjoy this when it first came out.

Now for the things I hated. The first one... my god the writing needed some work. There were so many things the editor and copywriter could've fixed. There were sentences that needed to be rewritten and paragraphs that couldn't have been completely taken out. I didn't need every little thing described to me in intense detail. It just wasn't necessary.

Violet also annoyed me a little bit. I think if she complained less and communicated with those around her more I would've liked her more.

I will be checking out book 2 but not anytime this month

This book is incredible. I loved it so much that I’m reading the second one. The INSANITY at the end though.. never saw it coming
