everything was good but the romance seemed a bit rushed and fast

I spent a month looking for this book earlier this summer and so by the time I acquired it, I had driven 4 hours across my state to get a copy. I was so worried it wasn't worth the hype but it absolutely is.
For starters, I appreciate the main character, Violet, has joint issues because I can relate. I have a heart condition and connective tissue disorder and I used to be a personal trainer. Reading about her training really has me motivated to workout again despite my disabilities. So that is the first gold star. I am so appreciative of that and feel I got a bit of my life back.
I know a lot of people have issues with the casual dialect but I rather like it. As someone who has read high fantasy for 20 years, it's sometimes nice to land on a book where it isn't like reading a textbook. It's written rather staightfoward, which I feel matches the overall tone of the story and the main character well. This book has a good world built and for once the size difference between dragons and their riders actually makes sense.
Truly I love this book and it's now become my entire personality. I am so excited for the next book!

This could have been great, instead, it's lazy. Rebecca yarros hints at a world that could be interesting and never gives you any of it. Have I clue what is the point of this war school they are all in? No, because she just lazily mentions a very important, years long war and gives no further details, hoping instead you'll be drawn in by her 2 main characters fawning over each other but even that is hard to do with the weird use of very modern, teen girl phrases Violet seems to love to use.
I wanted to love this, but I can't even be bothered to read the next one.
