I enjoyed this book more than the last one. I enjoyed the bits with Death and Xiao, I like their romance but apparently they’re never seeing each other again so that sucks. I’m super worried about Babylon because the evil Balloon is starting to teach him to become a killer. He’s such a sweetie and now he’s going to bring the end times. I also liked the bits with the Ranger or Thomas. He’s probably my favorite character, he has such good lines. Plus he actually has morals unlike Chamberlain.

“That’s right. Because all of those things just had the illusion of matterin’…But no lies last start of war—it’s like wakin’ up from a dream. War is the great cruible where men make their own destinities—become heroes of villains—are remembered or forgotten.”

This is a really great Thomas line.

So Chamberlain named his niece Constance Lee his Chief of Staff. I like her already.

So Babylon sees everything nice and pleasant as horrific and dead, while he sees everything horrific and dead as nice and pleasant. Weird.

Balloon: Where’d you get the demon?
Orion: Cheveyo summoned it from the plain and I grew it as an arm.
Balloon: Hmmm. Sounds painful.

I love the humor, too.

So far, in my opinion, this has been the best collection. I would have loved it if the maps had appeared at the beginning of the comic; it would have helped put things in perspective. I suppose that only became important as the series progressed, but I still really appreciated that they took the time to include those.

The Beast is freaking brilliant. I love where they are taking this character. I mean, it might be a cursory exploration of nature vs nurture, but I think it might go in some different directions than that. And I really appreciate the idea that AI machines could bring the child up. I anticipate the day when the child meets the parents - if it happens.

Another fascinating entry in the series. Tensions grow within the political world, and the apocalypse begins. It's the beginning of the end, baby. But not literally, of course, cause I still have six more volumes to read.
It definitely feels like things are slowly reaching a breaking point within this world. Leaders are losing control, nations are invading each other, Death is still searching for his son, and through it all, the remaining three Horsemen are trying to initiate the end of the world.

Loved Seeing Death and Lady Mao reunited again. I live for any amount of page time this husband and wife duo share. What a power couple they would be, if they actually spend any great length of time together. They'd be unstoppable. Lady Mao is already a formidable power-house, but with Death at her side, she'd rule the fucking world, and Death would be the first to bow at her feet. He adores her. I love how devoted he is to her.

This is an incredibly complex and intricate world, as proven by the added timelines, maps, and pages of data on each nation included in this volume. It was fascinating learning what sort of influence, finances, and military power each nation has compared to others.
Honestly? My money's on the PRA. Lady Mao has her shit together.

God, I adore this weirdness. It blasts into the world like fire, tagged with wit and adventure. It's violent mayhem told like a campfire ruse. Bless its heart.

I don't know exactly what's going on in this. I know that had all those pages that filled in the background of characters, but my lack of patience and ADHD got in the way.

There is so much detail in everything Hickman does, so I know he has a plan. In the mean time I'm just enjoying the ride. While I do enjoy this series I feel its probably 10x better for those who binge the trades or read monthly. If there is any time between reading volumes it is easy to be confused.

East of West before now has been a super consistent title. Each subsequent volume was as good if not a little bit better then the last.

This volume blows the other 3 out of the water. It contains the least amount of issues but worked the most for me. I'm not trying to say the previous 3 volumes were bad, the opposite really because it's a series well worth reading. But having the first "year" out of the way now things are progressing. Really really progressing. Death comes back to Mao, and each nation is moving in place to war with each other. And the beast is on the move and he's learning and he's currently my favorite part of this. There is a whole issue of just him and I love it.

Before now there was more plot then character going on. I think it has balanced out and it gave me that final kick it needed for me to love every second of it.

It also contains a world booklet that gives you the rub on every nation involved in the conflict, and that's helpful and interesting coupled with the timeline it gives you.

East of West is a great title. One you should read if you haven't started and continue if you have.

3.5 stars.

I'm slowly getting more into this one. I feel like it's starting to come together. And I know it's weird to have an issue be mostly a timeline, and for some that might be dull. I ate that up. I'm getting way more excited about what's happening than I was after the first volume.
