This book grew on me. I was less excited when I started it, but there were some interesting points to consider.

This is the perfect book for any woman transitioning careers/hoping to grow in their current role/wanting to make an impact in the world. I loved the theme of what got you here may not get you where you want to go. I think it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that because something worked in the past, that’s the approach you should take moving forward - this book addresses this common fallacy, among several others. I am eager to continue referring back to this book throughout my career to remind myself of the gems Sally and Marshall shared.

This was informative, but the premise seemed more to make women behave like men instead of focusing on best practices.

I keep thinking and talking about this one. I started it with some doubts about how this self help would be much different. Getting into the 12 habits and the anecdotes for each one made me realize I needed to take this one slowly and really absorb. I’m glad I didn’t audiobook this one, I was able to take notes and focus. I saw myself in a lot of the example stories, going through the thought process and underlying desires of each one was really eye opening. That’s the main difference in this book, it doesn’t just repeat “don’t be a perfectionist, don’t worry about mistakes, don’t think about others feelings” because it acknowledges society’s expectation that women put the needs of others ahead of their own, and that girls are mainly rewarded for being thoughtful and obedient. It gives ways to work through those behaviors in bite sized, actionable ways. I don’t know if this will cure me of my perfectionism, ruminating, and “disease to please”, but at least now I’m more conscious of it in myself and my colleagues.

My only gripe is I am tired of having to train and change my habits to be more like men, and while the book acknowledges this at some points I’m looking forward to career advice books for men in leadership on how to be more self reflecting and empathetic in the workplace.
