I ate this book up. It felt almost like a Charlie Kaufman film, a dreamy backdrop and a very human story with the creeping suspicion in the back of your head that something is wrong.

The ending of the book felt so rushed to me, and most of the characters were hardly developed. All I knew about the one non-binary character was their name.

Honestly nothing like happened but a lot happened if that makes sense? I really liked how Grief was dealt with and discussed. I loved her relationship with Lee. Also Liz and Billy like I feel like that could be a poly situation which I wish could have been explored. As for the ghost I found that interesting and the way it was like explained.

When I read We Are Okay it hit me so hard, emotionally. I call it one of my favourite books because of that, even though it might be a circumstance of right place/right time. So I had high expectations for Watch Over Me.

Nina LaCour is so good at writing emotions and making you feel for her characters. This one didn’t deliver the same emotional punch as We Are Okay, but I also think that my mental health is far better than it was when I read that one!
It was an engaging story that I read in under 24 hours, I loved the characters and the description of the setting was spot on for me.

I was NOT expecting ghosts. I thought the ghosts would be figurative, but they offer a spookier vibe than I was expecting. A good addition to your fall reading if that’s the mood you are going for.

Overall, if you have liked Nina LaCour’s other books I would pick this one up! It’s quick, emotional, and a little bit spooky.

I’m still confused though about whether there is a connection to We Are Okay, I couldn’t figure that out!
