If I'm honest I can barely remember the defining moments and continued to read out of already forged bonds with the characters, the story and the whole franchises in general. Still great a great book.

Love how everything is finally starting to come together and the stories are beginning to mesh. Martin has done a fantastic job with creating this world, it's so believable that sometimes I have to remind myself that I am not actually in westros !
I am really enjoying my rereads of this series. It's amazing to see all the little hints of what is going to happen next, stuff that I didn't get the significance of on my original read 8 years ago.
This book is part 1 of book 3 of the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series. This one was 603 pages, and part 2 is about the same size, if not bigger. These novels are massive. This one took me three-and-a-half weeks to read. I was really hoping to finish it in July, but I finished it on 1st August. I suppose that this review is only really useful if you've read/are reading the series, so I'll try to keep it brief.
I gave book 2 four stars, but I felt more inclined to give this one five stars because there's more going on. I think the problem I had with book 2 was that there were endless battles and not much else going on. In this book, the King in the North doesn't actually fight anyone, that we see, but there is a great deal of discussion and punishing traitors, as well as betraying new allies. Arya Stark is wandering through the forest, trying to get to her mother at Riverrun, when she is taken by the Brotherhood, outlaws and worshippers of the Lord of Light. Sansa Stark spends a lot of time worrying about what is going to happen to her, now that King Joffrey has chosen a new bride. The realm is preparing for the royal wedding, with many visitors arriving. Tyrion Lannister is still knocking around, having not died after the battle of Blackwater Bay. He's treated horribly by his father and his sister, as usual, and just trying to get by. Davos Seaworth is back in the good graces of Stannis Baratheon after threatening to kill Melisandre, the Red Woman. Bran Stark, Hodor and the Crannogmen are trudging towards the north to fulfil Bran's destiny. Jon Snow and Sam Tarly are facing individual struggles - Sam with the remaining Night's Watch party trying to return from defeat beyond the wall, and Jon with the Wildlings, getting to know their plans and pretending to be one of them. Jaime and Brienne of Tarth are being bandied about like possessions, and Jaime loses his most important feature.
In many aspects, this feels like an in-between novel. I know exactly what is coming in part 2, and I am looking forward to reading it in a strange sort of way! Really, in 600 pages, not a whole lot happens. People talk a lot and walk a lot. There's going to be a big climax in part 2, so I guess this one was leading up to it slowly.
It is difficult to decide what my opinion of the book would have been if I had not watched the TV show. In any case, I still adore the author's writing style and amount of human detail he includes. As usual, everything feels realistic and down to earth. I won't be reading part 2 immediately after this, because I need breaks from these massive books after I've read one! I'll go and choose something fun and short.
