I had initially rated this 3.5 *, but after finishing part 2, I'm lowering this rating to a solid 3 *, cause there is no way part 1 is anywhere close to being as good as part 2
My full review for parts 1 & 2 are saved under part 2.
My full review for parts 1 & 2 are saved under part 2.
I enjoyed this first part of the 3rd book so much more than the 2nd, simply because the pace was a lot faster, and the font size was much bigger. 10x less headaches!

"Old stories are like old friends, she used to say. You have to visit them from time to time."
A Storm of Swords: Steel and Snow (A Song of Ice and Fire #3 Part 1 of 2) was a very enjoyable albeit not very eventful book. Despite this it was very riveting and set the perfect stage for the events taking place in the next book. It's so expertly written that it felt as though I was experiencing everything for the first time even after watching the show. I was constantly on edge and cautious through-out the whole time reading, waiting for the next death or scheme to reveal itself.
What I admire about Martin's writing skill is his ability to write in several POVs and yet keep the story going without confusing or upsetting the reader's rhythm which makes it a comfortable, easy read. I never wanted to stop reading! I was surprised to find myself liking Sansa and enjoying her chapters as I didn't particularly like her in the show, which I also believe is to the credit of George R R Martin's writing ability.
"All men must die, Jon Snow. But first, we'll live."
Whilst this series is best known for its carnage and violence, I felt that this one was surprisingly tame which is what made it feel like it was somewhat lacking were the other books were not.
The only other negative I have to say about the book is that the under age wedding and intercourse is quite off putting, but is expected as they are present in the other books. I understand that this is the norm for the setting of the story and doesn't hinder the reading experience very much. That being said, if such subjects are sensitive to you I wouldn't recommend this series to you as it is present in many of the books.
"My sister has mistaken me for a mushroom. She keeps me in the dark and feeds me shit."
Something I love very much about these books is that whilst there is a lot of death, violence and gore there is also amazing humour. Tyrion Lannister's wit is one of the most note worthy things to take away from this series. His ability to use sarcasm as a weapon is amazing and inspiring. His sass has no bounds!
So whilst George R R Martin is busy killing, scheming against, maiming and planning revenge against our most beloved characters, at least we'll have a laugh whilst enduring it!
"Some battles are won with swords and spears, others with quills and ravens."
All in all this is another brilliant masterpiece, beautifully written. I cannot wait to continue the series which will no doubt emotionally ruin me but I'll enjoy every second of it! This series does contain sensitive subjects of a sexual nature/abuse so you may wish not to read it.

I really enjoyed this of course Martin is a fantasy genius! I disliked a few chapters such as Davos, I don't really like his character but I understand that this is meant to give us a perspective from Stannis' point in battle.
I love Sansa a lot, her plot is getting more and more horrible. Joffery still treats her awful beating her, mocking her and her family. What makes it worse is the Cersi doesn't seem to care, her son is king and that's all she wants. Joffery dismisses Sansa in order to marry Margery. Joffery still threatens to bed her and 'make a whore out of her' which is awful. Sanda cannot seem to escape no matter what. The Tyrell's are so kind and sweet I love them. They want to save her from this awful place and marry her to Margery's brother so they can be sisters. It's so kind and really shows how much of a good queen she will be. They ask the truth of Joffery, Sansa is so brave telling them he is a monster. Of course something else goes wrong for her and she is forced to marry Tyrion. I really wish things would become happier.
Arya is travelling trying to reach Riverrun to be with her mother and brother Robb. She is not having the best of luck being captured, her men getting killed, and being lost and completely unsure where she is going. All while trying to hide her true identity as a high born 'lady'. I feel sorry for her a lot. I just want her to be home and safe she's only 8/9? Hot pie leaves her and soon Gendry will leave her and then where will she be?
Jamie is a little shizz. He is such a sarky idiot but I love him. He goes through a lot in this book, being captured, released and then captured again Brienne of Tarth and Jamie are adorable how can you not ship that! They insult each other a lot and seem to hate each other but they soon realise they have to trust each other to survive. I'm really glad we saw from Jamie's point of view.
Bran's chapters are improving now her understands his sight powers and he is getting more ambitious trying to save Winterfell and reunite with his mother and brother.
I still wish we had chapter's from Robb! He is winning all the battles but losing the war. He is the KING IN THE NORTH! He is married and went against his vow to marry someone else. I think it would be nice to see the battles through his eyes.
Jon is a tough guy at 16 he had to kill one of his brothers he has come to love so he can blend in with the wildlings and not get caught. He went out on a mission and boom wildlings attack. Jon seems to have been accepted as he has become very close to Ygritte. I love them two together so much. They have slept together a bunch, the cave scene is gold, it's interesting how they both come from very different worlds but seem to get a along even if Jon thinks it's all fake his heart has definitely been taken by her. Last we saw him he is on his way back to his brothers.
I loved Sam's chapters. He may be a coward and he isn't scared to admit it and that takes bravery. He killed a whitewalker with dragon glass proving he can do it when he wants. He is a hero and saved a bunch of men, it just sucks no one believes him. I hope he does okay. He is such a kind person wanting to save Gilly and her baby boy. He has a good heart.
These are really hard going book but I cannot wait to read on in the future.
