A clear and accessible summary of how physics, astronomy, chemistry and mathematics came into their modern forms. Jeans also adds in some insightful commentary on how and why science flourished or stagnated at various points in history. Finally, reading the final chapters (written in 1947!) and comparing the state of knowledge then to now is very interesting.
