I breezed through this one, and enjoyed every page of it. It's a fairly 'light' book - and I mean this in a good way. The prose is unintrusive and to the point, the chapters are really short, and the story isn't weighed down with pointless sub-plots or meanderings.
I note that Dr Mascarenhas is a psychologist, and this actually makes a lot of sense. Aside from one of the main characters being a psychologist, at points we are treated to interesting insights into what makes some of the characters tick.
Speaking of the characters: All of the main characters are women. I found this quite refreshing, but surprisingly little was made of it. Perhaps that was the point - why wouldn't the main characters all be women?
The way the time travel aspects were handled was also interesting. The reader isn't presented with in-depth explanation of the mechanics of time travel, or analysis of paradoxes, etc. They are simply presented as givens, and the story moves on. This is quite unusual for sci-fi, so if that's the sort of itch you want to scratch then you'd best look elsewhere.

I didn't know what to expect with this book...I just thought it had a nice cover with bunnies on and it would involve time travel.
The single criticism I have of this book is that there are a lot of names and I sometimes had to double back to remind myself where they'd been mentioned before. But I guess in a Time Travel book, doubling back is kind of the theme!
This book surprised me in many ways. Firstly, all the main characters are women. I can think of maybe two male characters but they don't have much to do. The entire focus is on the achievements of various women throughout the novel, and I loved it! the second surprise was the gay element...a few of the women are gay but it's not a character-defining trait, they just like women! It was incredibly refreshing and the gay relationships in the book were treated like straight relationships-just part of the story.
The way all the women interact is the main draw for the this book...how the original four pioneers change over time and how they treat the people around them.
The time travel aspects were really interesting and I've never seen it treated like this before-there are no paradoxes, no changing the future/past and there's a lot about mental health and sex. We get a glimpse into the future but it's not about that; the focus is on how people react to time travel. There's a lot about death and how someone who can pop back and see a dead person reacts to death. There's a lot of twisted games and some freaky stuff like having sex with yourself.
Overall, this book is wonderful-it's science fiction, a crime mystery, and a book about women that doesn't make a big deal that they are "lady scientists"!

I probably would have had an easier time reading this as opposed to listening--the book switches between multiple characters AND timepoints which made it difficult to follow and I didn't really feel like I was able to keep up until pretty late in the story. However, when I was able to start following what was happening, I did begin to enjoy the story much better.
