This is an absolutely hilarious and charming book about a boy who was born to be a star....only to be cast in the school play as a squirrel. He must learn how to shine regardless of what roll he's given. The illustrations were great and this book made me laugh more than once.

I found this book on Publisher Weekly's 2020 list of LGBTQ books! It tells the story of a young boy who LOVES to be the star of the show. He is auditioning to be the star in the school musical... or so he thinks. Dylan ends up being a squirrel instead of the star he hopes to be and he must learn how to deal with that. I watched this book on YouTube being read aloud by the author and I totally loved it!

This story would be great in primary grades (1-2) to teach the students how to handle their negative emotions and how to make the most out of seemingly disappointing situations. I think this story would also make a wonderful addition to any primary classroom library to expand diversity and break away from the "boys play sports and girls act in plays" stereotype!

I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This was a great story that teaches kids how to have heart and always believe in themselves. Dylan wanted to be the star of the show, but when he's given a different role, he has to decide if this new role is something he can embrace just as strongly as the role he wanted. It reminds kids to be yourself and always be your best self, even if you're given something or put into something you didn't exactly expect.

The day Dylan has been waiting for is here: it's time to audition for the school musical. Dylan knows he's destined to become a STAR and his journey starts here.... until he's cast as a squirrel.... in a play about the solar system. But the show must go on and Dylan learns to pick himself up by his bootstraps and become the best squirrel he can be. This is a funny book that will appeal to theatrical kids and it has a good message about doing your best, even when things didn't turn out the way you thought they would.

When Dylan doesn't get the part he wants, he mopes until another kid makes him realize the opportunity he was overlooking.

We love Dylan and what kiddo doesn't have a hard time when their reality doesn't meet their expectations? The kiddo is full of character. :)

The drama-nerd in me is probably more than a little biased, but this book was entertaining. You don't always get the role you want, but you work with what you get.

Dylan was certainly a fun, expressive little boy! He gives representation to the types of boys underrepresented in kid lit--male future thesbian with plenty of heart and flair for drama. This picture book was delightfully drawn and a treat to read; I laughed out of loud multiple times.
