I listened to this as an audiobook.
Content warnings: I think a couple swear words if that's not your thing.
I found this at work and, since I had read Whisper Network and this actually seemed a little bit more interesting, I thought I'd give it a shot. Unfortunately, the synopsis is what ruined it for me. It touts itself as being a gender-swapped Stepford Wives situation, and that's exactly what it is. It was entirely predictable and unfortunately, I was expecting a bigger twist or just something more, but it is what it is.
Just like Whisper Network, Chandler Baker strives to include current feminist arguments for the sake of fiction, but unfortunately, we know all too well that the current misogynistic culture is such a problem that there wasn't any coming to realization about it. Though the wives' and mothers' tales sprinkled throughout the book just kept reminding me why I don't want to get married to a man. Absent fathers, abusive husbands, deadbeats - I already hear about it all too often in real life from friends and even strangers, and I see it from my parents all the time. So there wasn't anything that really set this book apart from what I already knew. It made the "twist" ending something I could see coming from a hundred miles away. Otherwise, not much else to say about this book.
I don't know if I will continue reading Baker's work. I feel like both Whisper Network and The Husbands were too close to being real as far as describing the misogyny women have to deal with every day, and the plots themselves are just filler.
Do I recommend? Unsure. Not for me. It's a super easy read, but the spoiler was in the description, so I expected it. I don't know if I'll continue reading Baker's work, but many people seem to enjoy it.
