This book reminded me of my own queer experience. I loved it. I laughed, I cried, I yelled at the main characters to do better. It was truly an amazing novel, and I'm so glad I read it. Couldn't put it down!

Dit boek stond al heel lang op mijn verlanglijstje. Op een bepaald moment stond het zelfs in voorbestelling, maar die heb ik uiteindelijk gecancelled, omdat ik weer eens te veel boeken in voorbestelling had staan. Maar het boek wilde op mijn pad komen. Dutch Venture Publishing vertaalde het boek naar het Nederlands en uiteraard schreef ik me meteen in voor de blogtour en bestelde ik mijn paperback.
Dit boek leest ongelooflijk lekker weg. Dat komt met name omdat de personages denken zoals ze praten en ook echt als tieners klinken. De hoofdpersonen zijn dan wel allebei vampieren, het zijn ook gewoon jonge mensen met dromen, twijfels, ambitie en onzekerheid. Ik kan me voorstellen dat er heel wat tieners zijn die zichzelf in deze meiden kunnen herkennen.
Daarnaast stelt het boek hele belangrijke vragen aangaande leiderschap, elite en wie bepaalt wie belangrijk is en wie niet. Ik kan me voorstellen dat niet elke lezer even blij is met de hoeveelheid queer karakters, de gesprekken over racisme en de overduidelijke roep om diversiteit en gelijkwaardigheid. Het ligt er ook wel erg dik bovenop. Maar misschien heeft de huidige maatschappij dat ook wel nodig.
Ik heb in elk geval enorm genoten van de politiek, de geheimen en de onthullingen. Uiteraard zijn de hoofdrolspelers tieners en veroorzaken ze behoorlijk wat drama zelf, maar er is ook nog een heleboel gaande om hen heen. Als alle puzzelstukjes in elkaar vallen, gaat het ineens wel heel snel en is het boek ook zo voorbij. Maar ik vond het einde wel heel bevredigend.

The ending was so anti-climactic and predictable. Kat and Taylor were cute, but that's it. All characters are so annoying. It had a great message but the way it was delivered... idk
I just don't understand. If the author was so into de idea of Kat defending bipoc rights, why did she make her the whitest character there? and all of the actual bipoc characters are secondary and not as important in the story?
Weird how the author ended up falling for EVERY stereotype there is instead of actually doing a good work for what she is supposed to stand for.

When I started to read the book, I was excited, but it started to get slow with the pacing. Good thing it picked up the pace around 50% into the book. I enjoyed the characters and the mystery that happens. The twists and turned were unexpected but not unwelcome. In the end I did feel like the book was overall a slow pace.
