i thought it was a good concept, i just think that the characters and tropes are a bit bland

This was an interesting read.
I enjoyed the combination of contemporary, fantasy, and urban fantasy elements in this novel. Especially liked the way the story was set in a world where vampires co-exists with humans, but hidden in a high society of secrecy. The intriguing way they must rely on a synthetic blood substitute called Hema to survive, learn as “youngblood” to control their urges and powers in the modern world and fight their ancestors was really cool to read.
The author does a fantastic job of world-building, immersing us in a society where vampires coexist with humans and face unique challenges. The concept of a vampires-only school adds an interesting layer to the narrative, highlighting the divide between the wealthy vampire world and the struggles of those like Kat and her mother, who can barely make ends meet.
The characters in "Youngblood" are well-developed and relatable, each with their own distinct voice and struggles. Kat and Taylor's complicated past friendship adds depth to their interactions, and their personal growth throughout the story is a joy to witness. The exploration of themes such as identity, friendship, and the desire for change adds emotional depth to the overall plot. The author skillfully balances the paranormal and supernatural elements with the everyday struggles of teenage life, creating a unique reading experience.
One aspect that stands out in "Youngblood" is the representation of LGBTQ+ characters. Taylor's open lesbian identity and her defiance against the conservative values of the vampire world provide important commentary on acceptance and individuality. The inclusion of queer characters adds depth and diversity to the story, making it relatable to a wide range of readers. Though the contrast of Kat, who initially identifies as straight, discovers her own queerness by discovering more about herself. I admired the way she was an ally to the LGBTQ+ community but also to the minorities of underclassmen, BIPOC and disabled. Kat, to me, was inspiring and fun to read.

DNF. god this stupid book annoyed me. Hearing white stupid lesbians complain about how hard their lives are isn’t really entertaining anymore.

Jongbloed is geschreven vanuit twee perspectieven. Die van Kat en die van Taylor, vanuit hun ogen volg je wat er in het verhaal gebeurt. Het perspectief van Taylor is veruit mijn favoriet. Zij is op Harcote "anders" dan anderen en heeft zich ook altijd zo gevoeld. Ze hoort nergens bij, vertrouwt niemand en verstop zich achter een berg sarcasme en koppigheid die me het hele boek aan het lachen maakte. Het perspectief van Kat vind ietwat gewoontjes, ookal draait een deel van het verhaal natuurlijk om haar. In vergelijking met Taylor vond ik haar karakter een klein beetje in het water vallen. Kar is opgegroeid tussen mensen, is arm en zou er alles voor doen om met andere vampieren te leven en eindelijk iets voor te stellen in haar leven. Ze wil zich ergens thuis voelen. Eigenlijk willen beide personages het liefst ergens thuis horen en geaccepteerd worden. Ze hebben een verleden met elkaar en komen elkaar per toeval weer tegen op Harcote, waar het verhaal mooi samen komt.

Je merkt dat Sasha dit onderwerp belangrijk vindt en ook een stukje discriminatie en buitensluiting aan het boek toevoegt. Het was iets extra's, maar ik miste denk ik een beetje iets waardoor dit onderwerp ook heel belangrijk werd in het boek. Het was leuk maar ik vond het niet perse echt iet toevoegen aan de plot van het verhaal.
hoofdstukken, het mysterie en de karakters zijn erg leuk en voor mij heeft Taylor dit verhaal echt gemaakt. Je leest erg makkelijk door het verhaal heen en ik heb dan ook erg van het boek genoten.

I was listen to another audiobook and it has a more complex story/main caracther (it was "Yellowface" by R.F.Kuang), I prefer to only listen to that, so I left this one.
The story maybe wasn't for me because I don't like contemporany romances.
I saw a lot of reviews of 1 star on Goodreads because they said a caracther was racist/misogynist, I think isn't far to raking a book 1 star only for that, guys we have vampires here. They were born centuries ago, of course they are gonna be like that!! I only left the book because I was more interesting in something else, but maybe I would continue this one in the future.
It's a basic vampire paranormal story, about a family of vampires. If you want something easy, super fast-paced, probably this is good.
