It took me a while to get into this book. I found the time period interesting, as I don't know much about this part of history. However, the gruesome acts that, although may be typical of the time, were very difficult to read about - and I didn't enjoy that aspect of the story.
It was very interesting to learn more about masonry, the making of cathedrals and the way monasteries functioned. These passages were very descriptive, and although I struggled to picture at times what was being said, it was very well written.
There are several points of view this story is told from, and I enjoyed some much more than others. I'm not convinced all of the view points added to the story. My favourite is Jack, so the more he featured the more I started to enjoy it. I'm glad I persevered with it.
The main story lines are wrapped up, so it felt worth the effort of reading this lengthy tome. I think in parts it could have been shorter, but it was overall worth it. The interspersing of names recognised from history added an extra dimension too. I will certainly look at cathedrals with new eyes. I'm not sure if I will continue the series yet. Like I said, I feel this has been wrapped up so no burning need to pick up the next. It is well written but I found some of the topics hard to read about, such brutality, particularly in this current climate.

Äntligen gav jag mig tid att läsa denna klassiker. Väl skriven med väldigt bra inläsning. Follet har skildrat den förfärliga tiden med allt intrigerande och våld på ett mänskligt sätt så att man vill läsa vidare.
Loved the concept and the obviously massive amount of research the author did but I just couldn't get into it. Might try again at another time.
