The beginning of this book was much better than the end. It seemed like Follett was pressed for space and simply increased the speed of events near the conclusion. The last 150 pages or so also seemed to have power struggles that went back and forth seemingly every page. It made the plot seem to be somewhat of a repetitive pattern of ups and downs that just became monotonous. That being said, I really liked the characters and their development throughout the majority of the book.
I got mixed feelings about this book. The story is good, but in the first half there are many 'dead' points, which makes it hard to get into. The story starts of with a big event which is interesting and reveals a mystery, but this mystery has no bearing on the story until the very end, at which you either have figured it out yourself or just don't care anymore. Still, the second half is much better. I was tempted to give it four stars, but it's not quite worth that, so I settled for three.

Although this book was fascinating and quite rich with details on medieval life and culture, I found it to be almost too long. I found definitely recommend it to anyone who loves histroy, in all its forms.

The first and best kingsbridge book. The cathedral is the main character and that’s what makes it work better than all the rest.

Meh
The story was incredibly absorbing as are all of Follet's books. However, the 'bad guys' were pretty bad and it took much longer than I wanted for their comeuppance. Perhaps this is more true to life and especially to life in the Middle Ages, but it made for some extremely frustrating and horrifying parts. Reading a violent rape scene more than once in a book is one too many for me.
