Do yourself a huge favor and listen to the audiobook version!!! The narrators voice is so beautiful and she adds so much to the telling of the story with her inflection and her singing. Truly the most emotive and moving narrator I’ve ever listened to.

The story is a bit slow in the beginning, with just tragedy after tragedy for our poor young protagonist, a fourteen year old girl named Adunni. I found that things started to pick up about halfway through, when Adunni actually began to see a path for her life to be different. Ultimately the book is about a girl’s resilience in the face of a culture that attempted to commodify her against her will, and the importance of access to education for all. The Girl with the Louding Voice is an emotional roller coaster and an impactful read.

A heavy read, following the many hardships of a young Nigerian girl. Her endless optimism and dream of finding her louding voice was infectious.

There are lots of triggering topics in this book, but it was fast paced and each chapter leaves you wanting to know what will happen next, hoping for a better future for little Adunni.

Heart-wrenching story of a young Nigerian girl betrayed by her father, then husband, then manager. She is depicted so beautifully, retaining kindness, hope, and a deep sense of purpose through all of her suffering.  Her spirit is what makes it possible to read through the traumatic things she ensures, along with three kind friends. It comes across as a song, a plea for the women and girls of Nigeria to be freed from inhumane treatment. The audio narrated by Adjoa Andoh is superb - highly recommend.
